Draws the definitions for a new type of psychology
Primer on LoveWhat is felt in the new millennium as an emerging, urgent turning toward soul is, Sardello contends, a calling for us to realize our capacities as creators in the world. In order to do this, we must discover what it means to love (not "I love myself" or "I love you" but simply "I love," and what self knowledge is. Goethe ssaid, "Man knows but himself insofar as he knows the world, for he sees the world but in himself, and himself in it alone." Sardello observes that one knows another only insofar as one knows the world, and our relationship with the world is rightly characterized by a never-ending curiosity for truth and the ability to observe the world through a heart that thinks.
Robert Sardello's fourth book, "Love and the World," addresses the necessity of the individual "I" and its relationship not just to the world but to world soul. Along the way, he debunks popular notions of soul (he has been known to say, "It is not a pet that we care for.") He carefully dismantles pervasive, romantic notions of spiritual love and leads the reader into a new way of imagining individual nature and soulful relationships.

one of today's most original thinkersSardello's fourth book, "Love and the World," addresses the necessity of the individual "I" and its relationship not just to the world but to the soul of the world. Along the way, he debunks today's popular notions of soul (he has been known to say, "It is not a pet that we care for.") He carefully dismantles pervasive, romantic notions of spiritual love and leads the reader into a new realm of thinking about individual nature and soulful relationships.
This new idea of intimacy involves a rich feeling life, one that includes but transcends personal feeling and returns us to a way of living and loving that includes soul as a quality already present in the world.
To understand Sardello, all that is required is an open heart and the ability to imagine ourselves, the world, and soul in a way that we have never seen before.
If you only read one more book on love, or relationships, or "finding" yourself, make it this one.

another great book in the series
By far the best in the series!
A reader with a question

Still relevant todayI saw much more than that sort of thing in Dr. Mendelsohn's book, however. The shameful way women were treated in their unique role of pregnancy and childbirth was something I had not noticed before. Even now, obstetricians direct women to the table. That, and the stirrups, tells us we're still in the dark ages. Maybe not even that. In the dark ages women were using birthing stools, which are still the right way to go. He aptly points out that where men got control of childbirth, out went the birthing stool and in came a bunch of unnecessary problems, especially the dreadful episiotomy. Since a baby's weight is often resting on its umbilical cord during a supine childbirth, treatments for fetal distress are made necessary, including caesarian section (which I actually saw recommended when my son's head was crowning). The reclined, leaning back, lithotomy position that is currently being promoted for childbirth, is just about as bad. The influence of the male-dominated medical profession is visible in supposedly midwife-controlled birthing centers, where women's childbirth education is routinely channeled along male-approved lines. Even women gynecologists and obstetricians still toe the male-approved line, a fact pointed out when the book was written, so you can't count even on a woman doctor to look out for your best interests if you are a woman.
There is a lot of progress that is just as overdue now as it was when Dr. Mendelsohn wrote his book.
a book that has changed the direction in my life
Excellent-Everyone should read this book (especially women!

Rescued to be a RescuerHis deep love for his Mama (grandmother) is more than inspiring.
The strength and success of a single African-American woman at a time when most of her peers were far from achieving her heights in business and motherhood show the reader just what can be achieved if you focus on what you have rather than what you lack. The most outstanding lesson in the book is the difference that love in action, directed by God's word, can make in our lives. This includes the obligation to pass the love on, person to person and generation to generation.
Although this is Dr. Benjamin's story, it contains elements of the stories of all of our lives. It also contains the answers to so many problems in our lives and the lives of those we hold dear. This book is a wake-up call to all adults in this country who can't figure out what is wrong with today's youth and how they can be helped. Finally, this book guides the reader on the path of emotional and spiritual healing which is needed by each of us for one form of pain or another.

Ocean Science for the common man
Ocean Science for the Casual Oceanographer
Exploring the oceansIn this book, Robert Kunzig takes us on a tour of the exploratory deeds of ocean scientists that has lead us to our present knowledge of ocean science. From young scientists camped on coral cays, to biologists in deep-sea submersibles, and geologists climbing South American mountains, this is an exciting and fascinating read.
I would recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn about oceanography in an easy to read format. But really, this book is for people who want to get excited about oceanography. Perhaps you are considering a career in oceanography, or you are a professional oceanography, or just like science? No matter. I think you will come away feeling inspired by the deeds of marine scientists, and the ocean itself.
If I felt one dissappointment, it was that the issue of global climate change, and the role of ocean scientists in this critical science, was not given their due. I think we understand more about the climate than Kunzig gave us credit for. But this is a book about exploration, and climate change, sadly, is for the future.

Excellent book!
A Dark and Compelling Book...
The most beautiful book I have ever read
